Donald Miles Gillmor was born in Fort Francis, Ontario. He earned his B.A. in 1949 from the University of Manitoba, his M.A. in journalism in 1950 and Ph.D. in mass communications in 1961 from the University of Minnesota. Professor Gillmor worked as a reporter (1950-1952) in Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada before he was appointed as an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota in 1952.
